CEORG April 2004 Survey
Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia:
What will they bring the European Union?
On 1st May 2004, the European Union, in the biggest enlargement ever, welcomed ten new Member States, among them the Visegrad 4 countries – Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. While discussing enlargement, much was said about what EU membership would bring to the new members. But what do the people of Visegrad 4 think their countries have to bring to the EU?
In April 2004, in the framework of the regular monthly CEORG omnibus research, representative samples of Czechs, Hungarians, Poles and Slovaks were asked the following question: “As they enter the EU, Czechs/Hungarians/Poles/Slovaks hope for all kinds of benefits associated with the membership. But what do you think your country can contribute to the united Europe?” Each respondent could pick up to three answers from a given list.
